Matthew Cohen is Professor of International Theatre at Royal Holloway, University of London. He has worked in higher education for more than two decades. He has offered undergraduate and postgraduate classes in Southeast Asian performing arts, puppetry, wayang kulit and related subjects at Royal Holloway, University of Glasgow (UK), Leiden University (Netherlands), University of Malaya (Malaysia), the University of Connecticut (USA) and Yale University (USA).
He has also delivered wayang kulit and wayang golek workshops for children at Cambridge University (UK), Burnham Copse and Hurst School (Hampshire, UK), Haddenham (UK) and for adults at the Scottish Mask and Puppet Centre (Glasgow, UK). He often works closely with gamelan artists in these workshops, resulting in short performances of wayang accompanied by gamelan by workshop participants. Past workshop collaborators include musicians Pete Smith, Rob Campion, Jon Keliehor and Signy Jakobsdottir, and also puppeteer-musician Joko Susilo.
Kanda Buwana is available to deliver lecture-demonstrations and workshops, ranging from 1 hour to a full week or more.
